What it means for us John Wesley said, "The Bible knows nothing of a solitary religion." Christianity is a religion of fellowship because following Jesus Christ means love, righteousness and service, and these things can only be achieved through the social relationships found in the church. Home groups—fellowship in action It can be pretty difficult getting to know everyone at church and finding your place in a large group can be daunting. This is where home groups can help. Essentially, they provide a place where people can meet together, learn together and grow together in a small group.
Here you can form relationships more easily and share hopes, concerns, beliefs and experiences in a safe environment—knowing that anything you say is in strictest confidence and that each person is valued for who he or she is. As you grow and learn together you inevitably care for each other, offering and receiving love and support through good times and bad. Whether you are puzzling over what it means to worship or you are enjoying a meal together it is so much more comfortable in a small group. You will be surprised, and hopefully reassured, to find that others in the group feel the same concerns and doubts. Where else can you learn to pray together, feel safe to speak your mind and make a difference to those around you? Whatever else it is, it isn’t a committee or a clique of the 'great and the good.' It is, however, a great way into the church. Often home groups join together to celebrate, or perhaps to raise money by organising a charity meal. It can make a difference to other people but probably most of all to you. |
